Chapter 20
I STARED DOWN AT MY phone as I twirled it in my hands.
Once Iâd gotten home, I could finally relax and process what had happened.
At least the good news was that the Arrettis didnât intend to hurt my family since that would only complicate things for them, and we probably werenât worth the trouble, especially because we hadnât found anything against them.
They had to be counting on Cole running me out of the school and town, and then they could find a way to get rid of my father too so the threat for them would be over.
At least for a while.
The video I had on my phone wasnât going to help my dad with the feds, though.
Sure, I had proof that Mr. Arretti was abusing his son, but I doubted that was enough for a serious investigation. The conversation Iâd recorded wasnât much proof either.
I might know or be able to guess what theyâd been talking about, but theyâd been extremely careful not to mention anything incriminating.
They hadnât even said my name or anything.
But there was one thing that I could do.
I could make Cole pay for everything heâd done to me.
Maybe his father had ordered him to get me kicked out of the school, but I was sure everything else had been Coleâs idea. Heâd been the one whoâd chosen the ways to torment me.
And now I could do the same to him.
I could post this video online for everyone to see.
Knowing some of the kids at my school, theyâd laugh at him and think him weak, despite the fact that his father had an army of men who could come after him if Cole dared to defy him or do anything against him.
I let out a groan.
This should make me happy.
I should be glad that Coleâs life wasnât perfect and that he was suffering, but I couldnât bring myself to do it.
I couldnât even imagine what it was like to grow up with a father like that.
What would even happen to him if the footage got out?
The cops would probably have to do something about it, but I was sure Mr. Arretti would find a way to get away with it, and the feds wouldnât be happy or too interested in the domestic abuse charges.
If the Arrettisâ boss was arrested, then his men would probably do everything in their power so the feds or anyone else wouldnât find anything.
Although, it wasnât like I knew much about any of that. But if the Arrettis were still out there, it was for a reason.
If I posted the video, I could be sabotaging my dad too.
Or maybe I was just looking for an excuse not to post it.
If Cole had a video like this one of you, he wouldâve posted it without a second thought.
Yeah, he probably would.
But I wasnât like him, was I?
I brought my phone to life, tapping the screen. Once I found Paigeâs number, I dialed it.
âHey, Ava. Whatâs up?â she asked.
âI need to ask you something.
